Joseline de Lima was wandering the dusty alleys of her working-class neighborhood in the capital of Togo one day last year, when a disturbing thought crossed her mind: Who would take care of her two boys if her depression worsened and she were no longer around to look after them? Ms. de Lima, a single mother who was grieving the recent death of her brother and had lost her job at a bakery, knew she needed help. But therapy was out of the question. “Too formal and expensive,” she recalled thinking. Help came instead from an unexpected counselor: Ms. de Lima’s hairdresser, who had noticed her erratic walks in the neighborhood and provided a safe space to share her struggles amid the curly wigs hanging from colorful shelves and the bright neon lights of her small salon in Lomé, Togo’s capital.

REUTERS/Anthony Marina Acquire Licensing RightsLIMA, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed four mummies of children believed to be at least 1,000 years old from what was once a sacred ceremonial space that is now in one of the oldest neighbourhoods of modern-day Lima. "The people who lived here during the Ychsma period still considered it a sacred space and therefore buried their dead here." Takuda said the mummies' skulls still had hair on them. CNN —A Philippine court has granted bail for Leila De Lima, one of the most vocal critics of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody “war on drugs” after being held in police custody for over six years. Organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have criticized De Lima’s detention, calling it “arbitrary” and demanding her immediate release. De Lima’s bail “must lead to dismissal of last bogus charge against her,” Amnesty International said in a statement on Monday. “The court’s granting of Leila de Lima’s bail application is indeed a welcome development. “Leila has been targeted by the government for her criticism of the murderous ‘war on drugs’ and other human rights violations.

"Finally, I will be freed," De Lima told reporters outside the court after her bail was granted. Two of three cases against De Lima have been dismissed and she had sought bail in the one pending case on health grounds, which the court granted on Monday. Her lawyer, Filibon Tacardon, told Reuters by phone, De Lima could walk out of prison later on Monday. Police always denied that and Duterte insisted police were under orders to kill only in self-defence. View of the Cobre Panama mine, of Canadian First Quantum Minerals, in Donoso, Panama, December 6, 2022. First Quantum on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law with the objective of benefiting Panama. First Quantum and its local unit Minera Panama declined to comment further. A decision to cancel the Cobre Panama mine's contract could slow Panama's GDP growth from an anticipated 6% in 2023 to just 1% without the mine in operation on an annualized basis. The odds of Panama losing its investment-grade rating would rise significantly if the contract is revoked, J.P Morgan warned on Tuesday.

REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSAO PAULO, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Brazilian auto exports are set to plunge by double digits in 2023 when compared with the previous year, automaker association Anfavea said on Friday, as a severe economic crisis in neighboring Argentina hits shipments to that country. "Exports have been the major warning point for the automotive sector in the first nine months of the year," it said. According to Anfavea, the crisis in Argentina caused the country - which has in Brazil its largest trade partner - to lose its position as the No.1 destination of Brazilian auto exports to Mexico this year. In the first nine months of 2022, Anfavea said, auto exports from Brazil have already declined 11.2% from the same period a year ago.

REUTERS/Bruno Kelly Acquire Licensing RightsMANAUS, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Life has come to a standstill for a floating village now stranded on mud flats left by severe drought in Brazil's Amazon rainforest. As Lake Puraquequara dried up, so too has business evaporated for the owners of boats and floating shops that are also stuck in the mud. The Amazon drought, like flooding in the south of Brazil, is a result of the El Niño phenomenon, which warms the Pacific Ocean's surface water, experts say. Things have gotten so bad at Lake Puraquequara that there is little water to drink or cook with.

REUTERS/Jorge Adorno/File photoASUNCION, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Paraguay is seeking more Taiwanese investment to diversify its farm-driven economy focused on exporting raw materials to China, incoming Finance Minister Carlos Fernandez Valdovinos said in an interview. Paraguay remains the only South American nation with formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. A Taiwan delegation including business leaders will travel to Paraguay in August for the inauguration of conservative President-elect Santiago Pena, he added. China, as a buyer of raw materials from Paraguay with no added value, "is probably convenient for some sectors," Fernandez said.

"Sad to inform you that the court denied Senator Leila's bail application," Filibon Tacardon, her legal counsel, told reporters. De Lima, 63, had requested bail in connection with a case in which she has been accused of conspiring to illegally trade narcotics in prison. She has denied all charges and had sought bail on account of her age and "several health issues". The court said her request was "untenable" and her culpability or innocence would be decided on the basis of evidence presented. A court in 2021 dismissed a drug case against her while another court in May acquitted her of a charge that she received drug money from prison inmates.

De Lima has spent the past six years in detention, five of which as senator, and has one more case pending. "Glorious day, glorious day, beginning of my vindication," she added. Duterte has accepted the court judgement, Salvador Panelo, his legal counsel during his administration, said in a statement on Saturday. "Freeing her now is critical so she can return to her family, leaving the injustice of years behind bars in pre-trial detention caused by Duterte's vengeful cruelty," he said. "The charges against Leila de Lima are bogus and the result of the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of expression.
BENGALURU, May 1 (Reuters) - India's factory activity expanded at its quickest pace in four months in April, driven by solid growth in new orders and output, a private survey showed on Monday, signaling resilient demand and an encouraging outlook. The survey results suggest India will continue to be one of the fastest-growing major economies despite slowing global growth that has undermined momentum across several other countries. "Reflecting a robust and quicker expansion in new orders, production growth took another step forward in April. Besides seeing the strongest inflow of new work in 2023 so far, capacities were expanded through job creation, input buying was lifted." Foreign demand also expanded at the fastest pace in four months in April and optimism improved.
REUTERS/Rupak De ChowdhuriBENGALURU, Jan 4 (Reuters) - India's services industry saw activity increase at the fastest pace in six months during the final month of 2022 amid robust demand, fuelling business optimism despite high costs, a private-sector survey showed. The S&P Global India services purchasing managers' index (PMI) (INPMIS=ECI) rose to 58.5 in December from 56.4 in the previous month, confounding expectation in a Reuters poll for a fall to 55.5. The index was above the 50-mark separating growth from contraction for the 17th straight month - the longest stretch of growth since June 2013. Hiring hit a five-month low, albeit in expansionary territory, even though the new business sub-index rose to a four-month high due to strong demand. Thanks to the growth in services as well as in manufacturing, the composite index rose to 59.4 in December, the highest since January 2012, from 56.7 in November.

BENGALURU, Jan 2 (Reuters) - India's manufacturing industry ended 2022 on a solid footing as business conditions improved at the fastest rate in over two years while growth in new orders and output accelerated, a business survey showed on Monday. The manufacturing purchasing managers' index (INPMI=ECI), compiled by S&P Global, rose to 57.8 in December from November's 55.7, better than a Reuters poll median forecast for 54.3. December's reading was the highest since October 2020 and above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction for an 18th straight month. "Following a promising start to 2022, the Indian manufacturing industry maintained a strong performance as time progressed, wrapping the year with the best expansion in production seen since November 2021," noted Pollyanna De Lima, economics associate director at S&P Global Market. Additional materials were purchased and extra workers hired as companies sought to supplement production and maintain healthy levels of inventories.
The S&P Global India services purchasing managers' index (INPMIS=ECI) rose to 56.4 in November from 55.1 in October, beating the 55.4 estimate in a Reuters poll. It remained above the 50-mark separating growth from contraction for a 16th straight month, its longest stretch of expansion since October 2016. However, growth is widely expected to slow in the coming quarters as high-interest rates hamper economic activity. "Evidence of stubborn inflation may prompt further hikes to the policy rate at a time when global economic challenges could negatively impact on India's growth," added De Lima. Stronger expansion in services activity alongside better-than-expected manufacturing growth boosted the composite index to a three-month high of 56.7 in November from 55.5 in October.
The seasonally adjusted S&P Global Mexico Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (MXPMIM=ECI) remained unchanged at 50.3 in October, from the same level in September. Mexico's factories shrank for more than 2-1/2 years starting in March 2020 due to the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Survey data for October showed that output slipped as inflationary pressures, cash flow problems and material shortages dampened client demand. De Lima noted that input scarcity, the war in Ukraine, energy price volatility and transportation difficulties pushed up cost inflation in October. "But worries over insolvency risks and unrelenting inflationary pressures dampened confidence," De Lima added.
WASHINGTON/JOHANNESBURG, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Angola will keep cutting interest rates as long as inflation is kept low, central bank governor Jose De Lima Massano said on Wednesday, forecasting that inflation will fall to 16% this year and 9-10% by the end of 2023. "Today we have interest rates in Angola above 20%. And if we have room to keep on reducing them, we'll do it," De Lima Massano told Reuters on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington. Unlike most other central banks, Angola has started to lower interest rates, delivering a rate cut in September for the first time since 2019 by 50 basis points to 19.5%. "Our currency has found its equilibrium and we are not anticipating major appreciation or depreciation," De Lima Massano said.
